In addition to supporting ensemble courses in Black music and dance, the African American Arts Institute (AAAI) provides students with training and experience through employment as a member of our staff. The AAAI annually employs qualified graduate and undergraduate students in instructional, management support, and technical positions.
Student Academic Appointments for Graduate Students
Student Academic Appointments (SAA) are awarded to full-time graduate students seeking masters or doctoral degrees in African American and African Diaspora Studies (AAADS), and other fields of study offered on the Bloomington campus. These positions offer a stipend, paid monthly over a ten-month period, full fee remission, and health insurance benefit paid by the university. The AAAI also has a long history of partnerships with other departments within the College of Arts and Science (Folklore and Ethnomusicology, Anthropology), the Jacobs School of Music (Jazz Studies, Voice, Choral), the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs (Arts Administration), and other graduate programs.
