KUKUSANYA: International Africanist Dance Intensive

KUKUSANYA: International Africanist Dance Intensive exposes participants to dance from the perspectives of African American culture and the broader African Diaspora through master classes, panel discussions, and performances.

Previously known as the African American Dance Company (AADC) Annual Dance Workshop, the AADC is proud to present KUKUSANYA as its 25th anniversary dance intensive offered to the campus and greater community.

Directed by Baba Stafford C. Berry Jr., the workshop features a faculty of esteemed dance artists, percussionists, educators, performers, and scholars.

Who can participate?

No previous dance experience is required to participate. All adult levels and students ages 12-years-old and above are welcome.

Scholarships for High School students

Scholarships are available for high school students, grades 9–12.

Scholarships fund the Full Registration for Kukusanya 25th Annual Dance Intensive, held on March 3 and 4, 2023.

To be considered for a scholarship, you must fulfill the following qualifications:

  • You must be a current high school student (grades 9–12)
  • You must have a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 (4 point scale)
  • You must complete the scholarship application form, which includes a short essay

Meet the Director

Baba Stafford C. Berry Jr., Director

Stafford C. Berry, Jr., MFA, is an accomplished artist, educator, activist, and scholar of African-rooted dance, theatre, and aesthetics with an extensive background in arts and education. He has studied performing arts in the US and in Guinea West Africa, and he has toured nationally in the US, and internationally to London, England, and the Caribbean. He is a certified teacher of the Umfundalai Contemporary African Dance Technique and a licensed Zumba® Instructor. Mr. Berry was Associate Artistic Director of Baba Chuck Davis' internationally acclaimed African American Dance Ensemble (AADE) for 14 years; Assistant to the Choreographer of Kariamu & Company: Traditions in Philadelphia for 5 years; and former Faculty at the American Dance Festival for 5 years. He served on National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), North Carolina and Durham Arts Council dance panels, and he served on Boards for the North Carolina Dance Alliance and Ohio Dance.
